the antagonist and his outlaw gang

Imagine this motorcycle gang on horses with guns in 1850 and riding into Los Angeles

Across the Tejon pass come a group of roughhewn Yankee riders on fine horses.

Five of them at first but soon they are joined by two more and then three more and as they ride more join at each road crossing swelling their ranks.   They are all following one man.   Jack "Red" Barber, known for his ruddy face and red beard.  This is "The Barber Party".

They are made up of American, European, Irishmen and Australian bandits with Texans and Irish immigrants. Jack "Red" Barber a former captain and an Indian fighter in Texas leads a band of criminals gathered from frontiersmen former soldiers and other eastern ne'er-do-wells with no respect for the law.

Red Barber is a self-avowed racist with a murderous dislike of Native American, Californios, Mexicans, African-Americans, and Asians.  He is a vociferous defender and proponent of slavery.

Vulgar, a thoroughly despicable leader of an avowed bandit gang but crafty and can present a smooth image and smooth talk to decent people when necessary. He is crafty and brutal.

Each member of the gang wears a carefully folded red sash around their waists above their gun holsters.

Red Barber has a secret, unknown to his gang.

Jack "Red" Barber is in fact a paid agent of a secret society of Southerners and Texans he met in San Francisco.

They are raising private racists armies and this is called "filibustering", also called "freebooting".

Their aim is to extend slavery into countries south of US borders and to establish their own governments.

These men are helping to ratchet up the tensions that would then explode in the Civil War. That is where he got the money to form and equip this gang.  First they will stop in Los Angeles to gain some needed funds by means legal or otherwise.

Red Barber is a charismatic and  able leader.  He begins to explain his strategy to his men.

The riders find a stand of trees that offer good shade and they stop to rest as still more riders join them.  Each is a rough looking grungy and unclean like a motorcycle gang.  They look and act like a modern day motorcycle gang might act, the same ethos, not like a bunch of cowboys.  This gang is dedicated to mayhem!.

New arrivals are handed a red sash that they wrap around their waists.
