HIS CHALLENGE

HE MUST DEFEND THE RULE OF LAW AND THE TWO BRAVADO BOYS FALSELY ACCUSED AND TAKE ON RED BARBER THE MURDEROUS AND CRAFTY GANG LEADER SINGLE-HANDEDLY WITH THE ENTIRE NEW YANKEE COLONIZER OCCUPIER POPULATION FIRED WITH RACIAL PREJUDICE  POPULATION AGAINST HIM.

THIS IS A PREJUDICE HE DOES NOT FEEL AND THAT SEEMS ALIEN TO HIS CHARACTER.

HE BECOMES THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE.

SUPPOSEDLY, "HIS PEOPLE" ON ONE SIDE AND THE CALIFORNIOS ON THE OTHER AND HE IS IN THE MIDDLE.

HE MUST TAKE A STAND FOR HIS IDEALS, THE SANCTITY OF HIS OWN SOUL AND FOR THE FUTURE OF THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES AND IN THE COURSE OF THIS SAVE THE BRAVADO BOYS AND MAYBE WIN THE HEART OF THE FAIR SUSANA BRAVADO!

Attorney Joe hardy is a young lawyer in the first years of his career, but not entirely wet behind the ears and with a healthy dose of common sense to guide his way as well. He is a formidable presence in a courtroom and while not an aggressive man he is no milquetoast and bullies and liars soon find that he has a backbone of iron.

Joe Hardy, 21 years old a Marylander with a determined but friendly face. His clothing is a combination of eastern professional dress and western necessity. He wears boots and a white hat but with no obvious presence of a weapon.

An idealistic young lawyer from the east, Attorney Joe hardy arrives in Los Angeles to establish his new law practice and comes to find out that he must first establish the rule of law itself before he can do that. At the same time a racist gang arrive in town from the north intent on plundering all of the Spanish Speaking population and all of the native Californian tribes and dividing the new Yankee population from the Californios already there.

Joe Hardy led by his ideals comes between this murderous gang and the two bravado boys and their plans to exploit the rising racial tensions of the transition to the new American government.

Hardy comes to defend the two Bravado boys who are falsely accused of murder and by doing that becomes an obstacle to the Red Barber Gang and they want him gone.

For reasons that will be explained the Red Barber Gang becomes intent on murdering the two Bravado boys.

A man of strong if sometimes classical convictions, Hardy believes in the rule of law and that it is being tested in every way and in every place, Idealistic, he was trained on the values and traditions of a republic and he believes that the practice of law builds societies.

He accepts the defense of the two bravado boys even though he must work his way through a corrupt legal system and a town with new immigrants anxious to establish their new rule in blood.

His ideal are real but will be tested by this first big important case of his career that he will take on completely alone. Lives hang in the balance and the future of the city that is just being born. He becomes a good man caught in the middle and his ideals get tested to the bone.

These are his young impressionable years and in the scene below he speaks of his love of Los Angeles, and his reasons for being there. This is one of the few vulnerable moments of reflection, but the young man waxes reflective with two friends the couple from the east who now own the haberdashery.   They know the pulse of the incoming Yankee immigrant population.

In this SCENE we come to know who Attorney Joe Hardy really is.

INT. BELLA UNION HOTEL DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES – NIGHT

DARIEN HOLLIS

You know, I never really heard the story about what you were doing before you came here to Los Angeles Mr. Hardy.

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

Well, I was educated by private teachers in Maryland and then took my legal training at Georgetown University.  I practiced for a while in Louisiana and then made my way to San Francisco and did well until I got sick with that terrible cough that we all got there and thankfully, found my relief here is Los Angeles.  When I was well again though, I just decided to stay here.  I like it here.

AMELIA HOLLIS

As do we, it was like a miracle coming here, I just love it.

DARIEN HOLLIS

Yes, we feel as you do. There does seem to be that there is something special here.

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

And it's worth protecting, a way of life is possible here unlike any I have experienced before and that is not an easy thing to walk away from.

AMELIA HOLLIS

It certainly is.

The waiter comes by and Tom Hardy buys another round of drinks, wine for Mrs. Hollis.  They sit back.  He waxes reflective.

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

(cont.)

When I first came to Los Angeles, I only intended to stay long enough to get rid of the cough, but I became fascinated with the life here, it is so unique, the beautiful climate and the valley and the beautiful friends that I have met. I remember the day that I drove my buckboard out of the dust, and I was so tired and just tired of being tired and sick when I reached the pueblo for the first time. The sun had just gone down and the sky was all glowing and the earth green and the smell of the perfumed air the beauty and the magic of the sky and earth here just entered my heart before I knew it.

AMELIA HOLLIS

I am sure that we both know what you are talking about Mr. Hardy.

DARIEN HOLLIS

So, you are going to defend those Bravado Boys aren't you.

AMELIA HOLLIS

It won't be easy when everybody is already convinced that they are guilty.

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

You mean that the Yankees are convinced.

DARIEN HOLLIS

Yes, that's what we mean.

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

How do you feel about that?

HOLLIS JACKSON

Well, I know that the Yankees feel surrounded and outnumbered.

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

But that's only in their minds, it's like they think that the Californios and the Indians could take back California anytime they wanted and kick us out of here but there is no evidence of that. I have seen none. What are they worried about?

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

They want to chuck the law, but you can't chuck the law because the absence of the law will chuck you and it has to be one law for everybody.

HOLLIS JACKSON

Well, they have some evidence on those Bravado boys, they have an eyewitness.  He says that he was with those boys and that he took part in the killings with them. What about that?

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

I have twenty substantial citizens of Los Angeles who say the boys were with them the entire time against the testimony of a confessed murderer. To my mind the question becomes, why would this man Isquera lie to implicate some innocent boys in a crime that he knows they did not commit?  That's where the real mystery lies. It doesn't make sense even on the most superficial level.  It just doesn't smell right. Something is going on there and I'm going to find out what it is.

AMELIA HOLLIS

Well, you might start with the jailer.

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

That's the second time somebody mentioned the jailer to me.
