Uncle of the third boy falsely accused, Young Elizalde

Angel Elizalde.

The uncle of the boy Elisalde called the Young Elizalde that is being tried along with the Bravado Boys.

This is Angel Elisalde, called simply Angel, the uncle of the boy called Young Elizalde that was also falsely accused along with the two Bravado boys and they are all being tried in the same court by the same players. If the Bravados are found innocent, then he would also be considered to be innocent since the same witness and the same evidence is being used against all three. Angel Elisalde worked on Yankee Clippers and has seen the world and taught himself to read. He realizes that he must get Attorney Tom Hardy to represent Young Elizalde even though he cannot pay the fee required to Tom Hardy, but he does have something of value to offer to the attorney and in the following scene from the screenplay, Elizalde is identified, recommended and makes his offer to Tom Hardy.

He has an arresting look about him, Elizalde is cool in every way with strikingly causing one to think that he is somehow out of place here, or in the wrong role in life, yet he is part and parcel of the world in which he appears. A bit mysterious yet clearly motivated here to help his young nephew of his dead brother get off of this false charge of murder.

They only way to give Young Elizalde the best chance is to give him the same lawyer and yet, Attorney Tom Hardy is known for taking large fees from the landowners defending or defining their rights even in the short time he has been here.

Yet, Attorney Tom Hardy it is already known has high ideals and common sense and both of those qualities guide his actions and are apparent to Elizalde’s wisest appraisal.

Elizalde is cool in every way with strikingly intelligent eyes.

He is wearing a pistol in a holster and a large sheathed knife and a new white and black and brown Manga rakishly tossed over his shoulder.

SELMAR JACKSON, THE GAMBLER

(speaking to Attorney Joe Hardy)

Did you notice the man standing by the door?

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

Yes, I did who is he?

SELMAR JACKSON, THE GAMBLER

He is the uncle of young Elizalde the other boy who is charged along with the Bravado boys.  I know you're not representing young Elizalde but I can tell you that his uncle Angel there, Angel Elizalde he is a man of honor like you are, don’t let his appearance now fool you, he is a well-traveled as an able-bodied seaman on the clipper ships, and I know from personal experience, he is a good man in a tight situation. I don’t know, but it looks like you my friend may be headed into a few tight situations and maybe, a friend might be a good thing to have. See you later.

Selmar Jackson walks out of the room and takes time to shake hands with Angel Elizalde and exchange a few private words, obviously the two men know each other. One can sense a definite feeling of mutual respect between the two men as if there was a history that we can only guess at. Two soldiers of fortune.

Tom Hardy gathers his papers together and Elizalde seems to be waiting for him at the door, obviously something is on his mind.

Once everyone else has left and the two men are alone.

This is their first meeting.

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

(to Angel Elizalde)

Thank you, Mr. Elizalde, for backing me up with Red Barber but it might get you into some trouble with Red Barber and his gang.

ANGEL ELIZALDE

Call me Angel.

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

Okay Angel.

ANGEL ELIZALDE

A man like me is already in trouble with a man like Red Barber Mr. Hardy.  It doesn't matter what I do, it’s what I am that he doesn't like.  I'm not worried about men like him Mr. Hardy, I am worried for my nephew young Elizalde because he is innocent, and he has no one to defend him like the Bravado boys do.

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

If I prove that Isquera is a liar that may help get your nephew off too.  Without his testimony there will be no credible evidence that your nephew is guilty of anything, except, maybe of knowing that scum Isquera.

ANGEL ELIZALDE

You mean "the liar" Isquera.

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

He is lying but I just don't know why.

ANGEL ELIZALDE

There is a reason, and we'll find it. I'll guarantee that.  Mr. Hardy, I owe it to my dead brother to protect his son.  I don't want to have to bust him out of jail because then neither he or I can ever come back to Los Angeles and I like it here and he does too, don't you?

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

I do like it here a lot.

ANGEL ELIZALDE

Okay, it looks like you are our only hope so if you need a friend with a gun and a rather large knife, who knows how to use both, I am now your friend Mr. Hardy, and you can call on me when the times get harder and it looks like they are going to get harder for you and the Bravados very soon, don't you agree?

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

You're right Elizalde, it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

ANGEL ELIZALDE

Worse for you now too Mr. Hardy, not just for the Californios anymore.  Did you see, the Yankees are all against you now too.

ATTORNEY TOM HARDY

I saw that Angel.

ANGEL ELIZALDE

So, here's my proposition for you Mr. Hardy. Include my nephew in your defense of the two boys and I will be your ace in a hole.  You play Poker, don't you?  You know Poker, it's that new card game that I learned working on the clipper ships.

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

I learned it in New Orleans myself.

ANGEL ELIZALDE

Then, you know what "Ace in the hole" means, right.

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

I think I do, an unknown advantage.

ANGEL ELIZALDE

For a Yankee, you're not so hard to talk to Hardy.  So, for now on, I will be your unknown advantage if you will defend my nephew along with the Bravado boys.

ATTORNEY JOE HARDY

Done.
